My Daughter Is Learning Life Lessons At Twenty One

We all know our kids are going to grow up, drive to friends' houses, where we can't see or hear what they're saying, go to clubs where we can't see how they are acting, or deal with friends' parents, and not see how respectful they are.

They are going to get jobs where we will not be able to see how well they do, or what their working habits are. Are they going to do as they were taught? It wasn't like this five years ago. She was in school, nothing to worry about but passing, and working a few hours after school.

Now it's time to learn life's lessons. I wish I could help her, like i did when she was a little girl, but i can't. It's her time to fly. She's strong and honest and loyal, and she'll do alright. All the time i took to teach her how to think with compassion and kindness, to act with respect and dignity, I hope, are following her on her new journey of discovery. Not only discovering herself, but the world around her.

There's so much we parents have already gone through, and now have to sit back and watch our children go through. however, if we don't, and something should happen to us, how will they make out then? I'd rather be around to guide and nurture, even if from afar.

Susan Thom is the mother of three children, two sons, 20 and 23, and a daughter 25. Her older son is in the air force in Germany right now, and her daughter is in the army in Tacoma, Washington.

Writing calms her, and gives her a place to go by herself! Clears the head and gets it out. She lives in a rural area, with a lake and mountains, and her partner, and has loved writing since she was a child.

She has been on a journey of self discovery for twenty years, and has learned many things about the human mind, and how to maintain some semblance of calm and peace within.

If someone reads one of her stories, and relates to her feelings, and gets a suggestion on how she dealt with them in a positive way, that would be the ultimate gift of her writing.

Susan, I have a 21 year old son. It's tough to watch them figure things out sometimes. The hardest thing for me is to allow him to fail so that he does learn those life lessons. I don't know about your kid but mine didn't come with an owners manual.
