Forgive Them Father, For They Know Exactly What They Are Doing

I have watched Jesus Christ Superstar, and Jesus of Nazareth, and the Ten Commandments. I know of the unbelievable compassion of a man who once walked the Earth. However I have not been Blessed with his forgiving ways.

I wish no one harm. I never have. I believe everyone has the right to this life, but there are those who think in pessimistic, negative ways that produce spiteful and revengeful actions. I guess they don’t know they are being watched by their Maker. It seems to slip their mind that we are meant to do good on Earth, not vindictive, dishonorable, and horrific things to people and nature. Maybe these people should be made to watch these movies, and be reminded of what their mission on Earth is, and it’s not what they’re doing!

Why people want to hurt other people has always been a mystery to me. Sure, schoolmates, or parents, or nuns, or family, or friends have gotten me mad at times, but I never wanted them dead or disabled in any way. I always figured their Maker would take care of the actions those take, on their fellow human beings. Nothing I could do would be as healing to their attitudes as the Divine.

I’ve been curious as to what these people are thinking who go against humanity and nature while they are committing their deeds of destruction. Do they not think of what their consequences could be? Maybe they don’t care. They may think the whole story of Jesus and God, or a Higher Power is an illusion, therefore, dismissible in their eyes.

Maybe they believe life on Earth is it, and that there is no life after death in which we will go through a review, and experience all we did to others, both good and bad, and understand what those actions led to. Or are they so sure of their negative actions, that they believe they are in the right? Do they think stealing from another is right, because they have no money? Do those that march in Ku Klux Klan parades think they are right simply because they came up with a certain way of thinking? Do those that rape and murder feel they will receive no consequences, because they had an urge? Do they believe even worse, that those urges were God induced? Do they sit and ponder why God would do this to them?

Where are those who take responsibility for what they do, and act accordingly? There are many rock stars who perform and give the proceeds to charities. There are people who ban together in their town to do the same thing. There still are good people out there in this world who are honest and responsible and hard working. Altruism is still alive.

Why do some offer help to the needy, and others steal from them? Why do some give clothes to the poor, and others rip them off their back? Why do some send money to different charities, and others rob the poor box? Why do some donate their clothes to the poor, and others steal coats in the cloakroom?

Does not knowing what one is doing, get them off the hook? And how can I really not know what they’re doing when they are holding someone up with a gun until they give up all their money and jewelry? Where is the right in that?

Does that person feel they deserve to get high with the money they get at the pawn shop, more than the person who owned the articles? Do they justify their actions by thinking the person they stole from must have a job, and can make money to replace what was stolen from them?

So many different ideas and theories and thinking patterns of the people of the world. Only my father was a kind man, who would give a person in need, the shirt off his back, and never expect a thing in return. My mother was a nurse, so need I say more?

The only power comes from above, and in this case, because I am who I am, I can honestly say, "Lord, forgive them, for they know exactly what they are doing."

Susan Thom is the mother of three children, two sons, 20 and 23, and a daughter 25. Her older son is in the air force in Germany right now, and her daughter is in the army in Tacoma, Washington.

Writing calms her, and gives her a place to go by herself! Clears the head and gets it out. She lives in a rural area, with a lake and mountains, and her partner, and has loved writing since she was a child.

She has been on a journey of self discovery for twenty years, and has learned many things about the human mind, and how to maintain some semblance of calm and peace within.

If someone reads one of her stories, and relates to her feelings, and gets a suggestion on how she dealt with them in a positive way, that would be the ultimate gift of her writing.

Do you remember I told you once Susan you should be a councilor? Well I changed my mind you should be a preacher. I never heard it put so well “father forgive them for they know exactly what they are doing” Oh someone corrected me once on one of your comments that I also made, it isn’t “money is the root of all evil!” It is “THE LOVE” of money is the root of all evil. there is a difference. Take care Susan

Oh, what a sad article, Susan. Somebody must have hurt you badly. I am so sorry, but do not be mad at people and try to forgive them. That is the true meaning of the words you paraphrase. There is a simple answer to all the questions: The people do the things because they believe it will make them feel better. We all do that, don’t we? Sometimes we are right, many times we are not. Try to forgive the thieves, scrooges, deviants and ex-husbands and you will be able to understand them better.

hi Martin, thank you so much for reading my article and commenting on it. yes, i have been hurt. it's been 6 months with no money from my estranged husband. my partner and i have been handling things, but the funds are running dry. things will work out, when the last penny is spent, we'll have our day in court, and be reimbursed, it's just hard waiting. and speaking of waiting, my soon to be ex husband will have to wait many years for any forgiveness, even though i know it benefits me. i just don't have it in me, yet. best regards, sue thom
