Life Is For The Hopeful In Spirit

For those who do not marvel at the hummingbird, suspended in air as it drinks it's nectar carefully placed hanging on the porch, for all to see, they are not making use of the wonders of our world that can lift us up when we are down. If one does not bask in the beautiful, warm sunshine, and know that some being larger than us created that sun, there is nowhere to go for comfort in times of great despair. If one doesn't find a bond with an ant, carrying it's dinner on it's back, which weighs twice the weight of the little ant, they are not accepting the purest of nature.

No one tells the bees what to do, or tells the birds that we have 3 feeders for them, and watch as they eat their fill, and fly over to the neighbors' house where they know there is more to eat. Spring is coming rapidly, who will see the first crocus, and wonder at it's majesty as it comes to life at just the right time. My rose bushes lie dormant all winter, limbs of thorns, and as if on a cue from God, they start blooming beautiful roses that I enjoy all spring and summer long.

It appears that nature is quite aware that life is for the hopeful in spirit. The little chipmunk that comes out of his cozy home, has to take the chance he can make it to the bird seed and back home again without the cat having it for lunch. The bears know to raid my garbage pails when it is nice and dark, and I can't scare them away.

The deer also pick the darkness to eat my rose bushes, and any other plants they may find inviting. The squirrel brazenly climbs our highest tree to get to the birdfeeder, and destroyed the poor wooden house several times in his attempt to stock up on a day of meals. It appears these creatures all have one thing in common, they are aware that life is for the hopeful in spirit.

Without hope, there simply remains negativity, and that feeling transcends into a life of pessimism, doubt, distrust, suspicion, and lack of expectation. How sad. I have no idea what good things are going to happen to me before I die, but I believe they will. Out of three kids, somebody's got to give me a grandchild. How wonderful could that be? Holding a baby that is present because you are! I can't wait. Our home is twenty years old, and we plan to make upgrades, and I am excited about that. I plan on continuing with my writing, and that excites me.

I am hopeful in spirit. The vast horizon is holding something in store for me. Fulfillment and altruism and self respect, and a calming peace that is long overdue. I can touch people with my writing, and that is inspiring. I can take care of my home, and that is rewarding. I can talk to people and I have friends I can count on. There are probably a hundred things I'd like to change, and plan on changing in the future, but for today, I want to enjoy these twenty four hours. Not tomorrow's problems. Not the week after's' problems. Not yesterday's mistakes. Not the mistakes I've made until this point.

Don't get me wrong, I evaluate each mistake I make, and figure out a better way of doing it the next time, but then, I let it go, it won't do me any good festering, while life is ticking by. I've come a long way in learning that life is a minute to minute experience, and if you don't get what you can from it, you have no one to blame but yourself. There you are, home from a bad day at work. There is a river a couple of miles away, with water flowing rapidly, and breathtakingly beautiful. If you choose to sit on the couch instead of taking a ride to the water, and appreciating nature, and allow your body to fill up with positivity, it is no one's fault but yours. If you fish, take your fishing pole.

Sitting in negativity is not a good thing. It affects our whole body. Our necks are stiff and hurt, our joints are achy, the muscles in our backs are in spasm, our stomachs and intestines act up, and going to get an ice cream cone with the family could greatly help all those symptoms. There's always an alternative to negativity. We need to be creative, and when our spirits are down, we must do something that will help make us feel better. This could be reading a good book, taking a bath or shower, listening to music, writing a story, emailing friends, taking a cozy nap.and now all my secrets are out!

These things help me, they are tailor made. Each of us has something we, too, like to do, hobbies or situations that calm us. These are the things we need to call on when we need a little lift to get back to being hopeful in Spirit. Yes, it seems the world is coming unglued, but with the right frame of mind, and the right amount of spirit, we can make a difference.

Susan Thom is the mother of three children, two sons, 20 and 23, and a daughter 25. Her older son is in the air force in Germany right now, and her daughter is in the army in Tacoma, Washington.

Writing calms her, and gives her a place to go by herself! Clears the head and gets it out. She lives in a rural area, with a lake and mountains, and her partner, and has loved writing since she was a child.

She has been on a journey of self discovery for twenty years, and has learned many things about the human mind, and how to maintain some semblance of calm and peace within.

If someone reads one of her stories, and relates to her feelings, and gets a suggestion on how she dealt with them in a positive way, that would be the ultimate gift of her writing.
