Miracles, In Tiny Segments

I think we all start believing and waiting for a miracle from the time we can first comprehend the concept. Something wonderful and fascinating will happen, and we'll be happy. It will surpass our wildest dreams. In reality, we are experiencing pieces of miracles everyday. On your way out to go to work, you forget your keys and have to go back inside. You unlock the front door, grab the keys on the kitchen table, and get on with your mission. It may have taken you 3 minutes. You start on your way, thinking about where you'll go for lunch, when a herd of deer start running across the road. You have just enough time to see them, and screech to a halt. About 3 minutes time. You are safe, and a piece of a miracle has just happened. Most people call it luck. The feeling of safety that comes over me when these types of things happen, lends me to believe it's more than luck. More like someone watching out for me. I say a litany of thank yous just in case I'm right.

I have left late to go somewhere, and been aggravated that I was running late. Once on the highway, I came upon a 5 car pile up. I knew instinctually, that if I had been a few minutes earlier, I may have been one of those cars. Pieces of miracles, all through our lives, if we take the time to acknowledge and appreciate them. Energy happens all around us, constantly. Was it mere coincidence that the energy of my car and those of the other cars was not meant to connect at that time? Or was God, and angels, and spirit guides, my mom, my dad, grandmother, watching out for me and changing the course of my destiny? Or did I simply and profoundly, just play a part in a miracle?

Over this past winter, I slid on some ice, and was heading for a telephone pole. I could see it coming closer and closer to the dead center of my hood, and I had no control. Within a fraction of an inch, my car moved to the left, and I missed the pole. I took pictures, and have proof by the closeness of my tire tracks. There was no other thought in my mind that in a few seconds, I was going to feel pain, and probably die. I was going about 40-45. When I passed the pole, and landed in a ditch, I couldn't believe it. And there was a man with a 4 wheel drive going by and asked if I needed help. Hell yeah! So, he pulled me out, and I was okay. To me, coming out of that as well as I did, was a big piece of a miracle.

When we have children, and they are first born and we fixate on their little fingers and finger nails and ears and noses and how tiny their mouth's are. We find it hard to conceive of their awesomeness. They grasp their tiny fingers around ours as if they already know who will keep them safe. Everything about them is a miracle, the most complex and intricate of all miracles. Just watching my kids sleep and breathe on their own, filled me with wonderment and thanksgiving. The fact that they were sleeping didn't hurt! We watch them prosper and learn and mimic and come up with things on their own, and we love them, and care for them, and make sure they feel safe. And if we focus, we will see pieces of miracles all the time. Watching your kids get all dressed up to go to the prom, and feeling such pride in who they've become, and knowing it is a miracle they are here.

Watching nature in action, and catching the miracle of simplicity and peace. Their main objective, to get food and water. They come to my birdbath, wash off, take a little drink, and then their tiny little brains tell them to fly, and off they go. Our roses were spectacular this year, and I can look at them from my porch swing, and enjoy the beauty God has provided, with a little help from Miracle Grow. Huh, the word is even in the plant food. Tiny little sticks grow into beautiful flowers that lift one's spirit and make us feel good. Small saplings grow high into the air and shed their beauty. They provide shade so if we so desire, we can sit beneath them and relax, read a book, listen to music, or enjoy the quiet stillness of nature. It's all pieces of miracles. We just may not always think of things as such.

When my son tells me that every single time I call, as soon as the phone rings, he knows it's me, that's a miracle, a connection that defies rationalization. It's not like he doesn't get dozens of calls a day. A supernatural occurrence. That's what the thesaurus refers to as a miracle. I believe their are many supernatural occurrences happening all over the world, to all of God's people, they may be too busy and jumbled in thoughts to recognize a miracle when they see one, but the pieces of miracles we get are with us all the time. This site is a miracle. I was unaware that i would need a place to preserve my sanity while going through a bad time, and I came across this site, and was able to keep my mind somewhat lucid by writing. I have made friends, and my writing has improved, and someday, my name may be on the cover of a book. Now, that would be my miracle. And miracles do happen.

Susan Thom is the mother of three children, two sons, 20 and 23, and a daughter 25. Her older son is in the air force in Germany right now, and her daughter is in the army in Tacoma, Washington.

Writing calms her, and gives her a place to go by herself! Clears the head and gets it out. She lives in a rural area, with a lake and mountains, and her partner, and has loved writing since she was a child.

She has been on a journey of self discovery for twenty years, and has learned many things about the human mind, and how to maintain some semblance of calm and peace within.

If someone reads one of her stories, and relates to her feelings, and gets a suggestion on how she dealt with them in a positive way, that would be the ultimate gift of her writing.

Wonderful article, Sue. I feel the same way about small miracles--I know they happen to me many times a day and I, too, say my quick thanks of appreciation for all that I am given or has been done for me. You certainly have a way with words, Miss Sue.
