Thank God, There’s Always The Future

How many of us wish we could do something over again? We may take a test and do poorly, and wish we could take it over again. Sometimes, that's an option and sometimes we have to accept the grade we get. However, in the future, we can make sure we study harder, and sure enough, we get a better grade.

We may blame the world and all in it for our state of affairs. We didn't do anything, the rest of the world did. As long as we believe that, our future will be as bleak as our present. As long as another day dawns, we have a way to start over. If we are angry walking into work, just because we're awake, we can change that attitude in the future to a more happy and pleasant personality.

If we cheat on our taxes, we can rectify that in the future. If we are stubborn, we can tone it down in the future to determination and strength. If we are shy and withdrawn, the future may find us outspoken and open. We may try piano lessons, and be unable to carry any kind of a tune. In the future, we may try again, and play beautifully.

We might be able to afford a small, one bedroom apartment when we are in our 20's. It may be cramped, and filled with all of the things we have no room for. In the future, we might have a better job, and be able to afford a nicer, bigger place to live. It may even come with a garage or storage space. You never know about the future.

Where we are going in the future, should ideally be better than where we've been in the past. This takes effort on our part if we want to change things we are not happy with. If we are lazy, we can push ourselves a little harder. If we are nasty and mean, we can drop those character traits and pick up cordial and compassionate ones.

The future is wide open. We can enter it in any way we decide. It's really up to us. The power of positive change is a gift. There are many who will stay the way they've always been, and that is their choice. However, to talk and act in a way we can be proud of, is to take advantage of that gift from God.

Some can do it, and some will always stay stuck in their anger and nastiness. For me, the future is an open book. I can behave the way I want, and how I see fit. Luckily, I had good parents that taught me right from wrong, and good from bad. And yes, I have made many mistakes, and had very poor judgment. We may have good parents, but do we always listen to their teachings?

The future is so important for us to be able to improve our characteristics, the way we think and act, and the way we feel about ourselves. It is ahead of us, not behind. It's a blank canvas for which we can right any wrongs. If we drink too much, we can stop. If we swear too much, we can stop. If we are involved in drugs, we can become uninvolved.

When our world is in disharmony, we can change it. When we lie, we can start telling the truth. When we are lazy, we can push ourselves to do things we otherwise wouldn't do. The future gives us the opportunity to improve ourselves. When we are unresponsive to others, we can become more outgoing. We can do anything our minds will us to do, if we so choose.

If we get embarrassed easily, we can toughen our skin. If we know who we are, and what we stand for, there won't be any reason to be embarrassed. If we write, we can write about good things, and better concepts. If we want to help others, we can allow our minds to dictate what we type. We can share our knowledge, and absorb from others.

The past is never so overwhelming that the future can't find positive change. Of course, we have to do our part. The future itself can't change us unless we are willing to do the work. Most of us know what we have to change. We might ignore it, but we know. Some are adamant about never changing. Those are the ones who make it difficult for those who do change.

So, if you feel the need, and have the desire to improve, you are headed in the right direction. Not only will your world seem happier, but so will all who deal with you. The mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Susan Thom is the mother of three children, two sons, 20 and 23, and a daughter 25. Her older son is in the air force in Germany right now, and her daughter is in the army in Tacoma, Washington.

Writing calms her, and gives her a place to go by herself! Clears the head and gets it out. She lives in a rural area, with a lake and mountains, and her partner, and has loved writing since she was a child.

She has been on a journey of self discovery for twenty years, and has learned many things about the human mind, and how to maintain some semblance of calm and peace within.

If someone reads one of her stories, and relates to her feelings, and gets a suggestion on how she dealt with them in a positive way, that would be the ultimate gift of her writing.
