What The World Needs

I believe the world is in dire need of a conscience, and I am happy to say I think it may be getting one. It is so difficult to watch the news, and hear all the disasters that are taking place, and the people going off to fight or be fought upon. A woman spraying pepper spray so she could purchase an x box. My parents would be shocked at the behavior of this, our human race. Not that they didn’t have their own problems, but I don’t think it was anything as violent or blatantly selfish as the occurrences in our world today.
We are cutting our own throats, and that of future generations, providing there are future generations. Hope and faith are having a hard time staying alive in people’s hearts. Layoffs are rendering fathers’ jobs as heads of their households impossible without assistance. The bigger picture is bleak. However, we can make our part of the world better in even the smallest way, and at no cost. A smile can go a long way in making someone feel good.
Politeness shows a conscience, and I believe I’ve seen more smiles than frowns in the past few years. Could it be that we, as humans, understand better that we should treat others as we want to be treated? Did things get so bad that we realized there was no way but up? Did the parts of our brains that were closed, open up to the fact that we are all humans, no matter what our skin color, race, or creed? Have we finally come to the conclusion that getting along is better than not? Have we awakened to the fact that we are all equal. And should be treated as such?
How much have we learned from our children? Their open mindedness and desire to have all people blend together as one entity, may very well be the reason we, as adults, have softened. We can learn a lot from humility and good manners. Our conscience knows what way we should behave, in thought, actions, and reactions. To act differently, causes distress in our souls and unrest in our hearts. This fighting in other countries is a power play to be the biggest and best, and it is taking a toll on our young.
We are in no danger, and even if another country needs our help, should we lose our boys and girls, men and women, to fight their battles they created? How can those that make these decisions, sleep at night and live daily with a clear conscience? This would be a moral sense, an inner voice, a sense of morals, and a belief in duty. Hopefully, life will move toward everyone having a clear and good conscience, and the travesties that haunt us will end. If we all do our part in treating each other with respect, understanding, and compassion, our world will be that much better to leave to future generations.

Top-level comments on this article: (2 total)I agree 100% Susan...too many people shrug their conscience right off their shoulders when it attempts to land because it is not round and soft it is angular and causes discomfort. We have created a cozy world where discomfort is not tolerated and I fear that includes the discomfort of feeling 'sorry' 'ashamed' and 'guilty'. We need to learn once more how to appreciate the importance of these uncomfortable feelings.
