How Do You Relax With A Mind That Won’t Quit

Sometimes, I just have to laugh to myself, as I smile and I acknowledge God’s Divine intervention. I felt the need to write today but didn’t have a clue what to write about, and then, there was Bruce! And with a topic I chase everyday, and have for years.
I have been trying my entire life to find books, documentaries, therapists, anti depressants, hot tea, sitting by a stream or waterfall, etc. that will lead to peace and relaxation. I swear I was born nervous and aggravated and impatient. Nervousness and stress were always a part of my daily being. This also, of course, led to physical ailments stemming from the wound up coil they named Susan. I remember my mom, who was a nurse, by the way, taking me to different doctors in my late teens, and trying to get to the bottom of my disposition, but it never happened. It appeared in my 30’s, that this transformation was in my hands.
So we ask, "Is that one of those cell phones?" The reply would so nicely be received, if we were to hear, "Why, yes, it is. I just purchased it yesterday."
Instead, we might hear, "What is wrong with you, is there a piece of your brain missing? Everybody knows what cell phones are!" Big difference. Relaxation goes out the window, and negative nerves and energy penetrate our soul. Seems trivial, but words hurt the core of who we are, even in small ways. If our core is hurt, how can we relax? I used to take anything said to heart and soul. Over the years, I have learned that it is not ME who is in the wrong, and my soul can stay intact, and focus on more positive things.
Ignorance may very well be bliss, if we ignore others’ moods and lack of harmony, and stick to the new haircut we are getting tomorrow, or the new outfit we just got. We can learn how to relax ourselves when times get rough and nerves become frayed. Alcohol is a depressant, so besides one drink, or a nice glass of wine, it’s not an option to drown your sorrows and get drunk. Definitely not worth it! Writing is a great way to calm one’s inner beast. The focus is on the writing, and not the fact that the heater just went out, and there’s no money to fix it. Thinking back to happier times also helps. Remembering when our kids were babies, or enjoying the babies they in turn now have, are positive ways to relax.
I know when I go through the thousands of pictures I have for my kids, I will be relaxed as wonderful memories appear in front of me, and warm my heart and soul. Reading is a great escape that leaves no hangover, and no empty beer bottles to remind one of how much was consumed! Anxiety and shame-no relaxing there. Emailing those we have come to know and love is a wonderful relaxing tool. With facebook and other programs, we can hook up with old friends and classmates, as well as family. Sometimes, we come across someone we haven’t seen or talked to in many years. I think the key to relaxation is to center ourselves by doing something that we enjoy, and can become positively immersed in.
Walking usually calms the soul and reinspires the mind. It may be something we need to push ourselves to do, but once outside, the nature that lives in our being, is connected to the energy of life. Whiskers twitching on a rabbit can remind us of the energy that we all have in common, man or beast. The rainbow we see for a few brief seconds, may elevate us to that sense of relaxation we are searching for. The streams of yellow light falling from the sun, may allow us to relax and enjoy, instead of fight and destroy. Relaxation awaits us, if we are agreeable to the time and imagination we are willing to put forth. We may know we have a piece of our brain missing, but we can get ourselves to the point of not letting anyone else’s thoughts and opinions about our brains hurt us.
The strength of our minds depends on the faith we have in a Light that will call us home at some point, but in the meantime, we can learn how to relax!

This was a very good article. I think it is worth noting that many people have a predisposition to get "more" anxiety or other issues such as depression, through genetics and brought out by lousy environment. I believe though that they too can get better using the suggestions you outline. In addition, medication is okay too. People need help and medications can and do help millions--no shame in that. Anyway, I thought your article was wonderful. Please log in to respond to this comment.hi steve,

what we do about it or with it, is our choice.
life is hard for everyone, in their own different ways, and a little relaxation can go a long way.
